Vocal Breathing Exercises For Singers Tutorials And Tips

We rarely think about our breathing. We inhale and exhale without ever really paying any attention to what we’re doing. Breathing is vitally important for singers. Learning how to breathe correctly will help improve your singing voice significantly.

Learning how to control your lungs and windpipe is one of the foundations of learning how to sing. Breathing correctly means you have better control of your voice and that you can use it to optimum effect when you sing. Taking private singing lessons will instantly help you improve your singing voice.

We’re born with the ability to use our lungs in a natural and correct way. Babies can breathe, and scream at the same time because they use their lungs without any thought. However, as we get older we become lazy in the way we use our lungs. Instead of a normal breath, often we only use the upper part of the lungs to take in shallow breaths.

In order to understand breathing we need to understand how our body works.

How The Lungs Work

A muscle system called the diaphragm surrounds your lungs. The diaphragm is attached to the lower ribs on the sides, bottom and the back and acts as an inhalation device. When you breath in the muscle lowers. This moves the stomach and intestines. When you breath out, the diaphragm manages the muscles around your lungs and also controls how soon your breath is exhaled.

If you breathe out quickly, then the diaphragm will not doing anything. However, when you breathe out slowly, the diaphragm resists the action of the abdominal muscles. Over time, a singer can learn how to control their breath and the muscle system around it.

A singer expands the lungs by inhaling. A singer will then control the amount of air that is released when singing a note by allowing the muscle system to remain expanded. This way, the stomach is not pushed out, but is instead blown up like a balloon. The singer will then slow down the rate at which the stomach will go down.

Most of the time, people will only use the top half of their lungs when they breathe. If you learn how to breathe correctly, then you’ll breathe using the whole of the lungs. Using all the lungs means that there will be more air available and the singer is able to better control the amount of breathe exhaled while singing a note.

Learning how to control your breathing will help you during any singing lesson. Learning how to breathe correctly also benefits singers in other ways. Your posture and abdominal breathing will also improve. Despite the benefits of learning how to control your breath, learning how to breathe correctly doesn’t require you be physically fit. With the right singing teacher, anybody can learn how to breathe and support their voice.
